It was drilled by the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Company ( ITIO ). 4. The principal consumer product was the illuminating oil kerosene. 5. Silliman's report of April 1864 stated that " rock oil " could yield an excellent illuminating oil . 6. In a two-page opinion, the Court invalidated a nationwide law prohibiting all sales of naphtha and illuminating oils . 7. As a result, the illuminating oil industry in the United States completely switched over to petroleum in the 1860s. 8. The oil was mostly a nuisance, but some salt producers saved it and sold it as illuminating oil or medicine. 9. By 1836, the salt wells were producing 50 to 100 barrels per year of oil that was sold as illuminating oil . 10. In 1901, Phoenix Oil and Osage Oil companies combined their assets to form the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Company ( ITIO ).
